“Kokyuu" was written for my friend João Pedro Silva, a formidable musician that I admire a lot. The premiere was originally planned to be part of a programme focused on the subject "The Roaring Twenties", a the period that, after a World War followed by the “Spanish flu”, was characterized by feelings of courage, relief and freedom. One hundred years on, we are also experiencing unusual times, but of asphyxiation, caused both by a new pandemic and by the multiplication of threats in the most varied domains. This is, therefore, a piece about breathing, about the air we breathe, written in the roaring year of 2020 and premiered at a time when the musicians take the stage with masks on their faces. In this work, scored for a wind instrument in the foreground, the soloist assumes himself as a metaphor for this condition, looking for points of balance and harmony with the orchestra that can also be heard as a kind of amplified “lung”. - © LT, December 2020

“Kokyuu" foi escrito para o meu amigo João Pedro Silva, um músico formidável que muito admiro.
A estreia estava originalmente planeada para integrar um programa cujo tema seria os Loucos Anos 20, dedicado ao período que, depois de uma Guerra Mundial seguida da “gripe espanhola”, se caracterizou por sentimentos de ânimo, desafogo e liberdade nos costumes.
Passados cem anos, vivemos também tempos loucos, porém de asfixia, causada tanto por uma nova pandemia, como pela multiplicação de ameaças nos mais variados domínios. Esta é, portanto, uma peça sobre respiração, sobre o ar que respiramos, escrita no ano louco de 2020 e estreada num tempo em que os músicos sobem ao palco com máscaras no rosto. Tratando-se de um concerto para um instrumento de sopro, o solista assume-se como metáfora desta condição, procurando pontos de equilíbrio e de harmonia com a orquestra que pode ser também entendida como uma espécie de “pulmão” amplificado. - © LT, Dezembro 2020
